ACO 5.0 - Visual Statement

Our topic is about the importance of addressing mental health. A main part of our film was focused on Hawaii's youth and the amount of teens that are dealing with forms of mental illnesses. We feel that it's a very important subject and that more people should be addressing the topic. In this project we were assigned to make a narrative statement that explores a topic we are all passionate about. This topic is important to my team and I because we feel that many teens, especially in Hawaii and on our own island are in need of help when it comes to mental health problems, we also feel that as a society, we should be teaching kids about mental health in school etc. The goal of this project was to do research on a topic of our choice and write a script in our own words. Another requirement was that the film should be 2-3 min long, while incorporating high quality visuals and audio. For this assignment Shaila was the lead script writer, Lucas was the lead camera, Victor helped contribute to both the script / helped with the research, and I focused mainly on the editing.

I've enjoyed working with final cut pro. As the editor for this project I was able to learn some tips and tricks along the way. Some examples are, shortcuts for blading, importing content, and sound production. Its important to use FCPX libraries, events and projects properly so that you can stay organized and produce quality work. Audio levels can (and almost always do) vary for each clip depending on the place/person were filming. To correct them you can change the audio levels / decibels. I think that in our project displays higher audio - because the camera has a smaller view finder it was hard to always be sure that everything was as focused as it could be.

One of our biggest challenge my teammates and I had well doing this project was filming, because it was hard for us to find people that could be in our film. We overcame this by going to the art class and asking the teacher if we could use 4-5 of her students who was done with there work and that wanted to be in our film. Another challenge that we had was not having enough photos to finish up the editing. The way we will overcome this is by us going out and getting the films that we need. Well we all did our parts that we signed up to do. We all wanted to get this project done with so that way we will not get frustrated if we have other projects that we did and did not finish yet. One of the enjoyable part of this project was taking some films and working with classmates I never did work with before. Another enjoyable part of this project is that I actually had fun working with people that I don't really talk to or hang out with in class. Reflecting back at my groups critique results I would say that I agree. We worked really hard to get quality work done and all put in or bet effort. Although our video wasn't the full two minutes we did the best we could.

ACO 1.0 - Modern Art Movement

Expressionism was influenced in various cities across Germany. This was in response to a widespread anxiety about humanity's increasingly conflicting relationship with the world. Not only that but also lost feelings of authenticity and spirituality. The influence that Expressionism had on the arts and communications industry was that it had created new standards in the creation and judgment of art. I love this movement because expressionism work is always telling a story. You're always trying to understand the emotions of the artist when looking at expressionism art.

Old Guitarist (1903), Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso created the artwork shown above. The piece is called "Old Guitarist" and was painted in 1903. Picasso painted the "Old Guitarist" after his close friend committed suicide.  I feel that Pablo Picasso was trying to communicate sadness and show that the only sense of happiness was his guitar. In the piece he mainly uses blue colors but the guitar carries warmer colors. In my opinion art can only affect people who understand it - if a piece of art doesn't connect with someone it's not likely that it will suddenly change the way someone sees something. I think that as technology has advanced art culture has changed in many ways - but I think thats like all forms of art, not just painting. For example with photoshop and other applications art can be done online through a computer. Another example of how "art" has changed is film - its expectations and the industry as a whole has changed drastically. Its hard to judge weather of not its improved or hindered the cultural impact of skilled art production or not because its hard to judge ones "skill".

ACO 7.0 - Workplace Safety Video

The topic for our workplace safety video was proper handling of tools and equipment. Our goal was to tell our audience the "dos" and "don'ts" of using classroom apparatus in our ACCP Core class. My teammates are Isabella  and Ahnahi. I was the cameraman and editor, Ahnahi was the actor and audio creator, and Isabella was the script writer and digital portfolio creator. I feel that Isabella deserves special recognition because she did a great job with the script - and working with the layout of the scenes. Isabella also did a great job of helping with the voice over portion of the project.

Our biggest takeaway from this project is that effective communication is essential for teamwork. We learned that proper handling of tools and equipment is an important part of workplace safety. We use lots of appliances in Mr. Sanderl's classroom, some of which are expensive or fragile. Looking back at the reflection from our critique results, our lowest score was clarity of audio and our highest was relevance of visuals. Given that we only had two days to film and edit - it made getting all the content we needed difficult. Next time I would focus on getting trying to get the script done faster so that we wouldn't have to cram all of our editing into one day. But overall I feel that my teammates and I produced good work especially for the time frame that we were given.

ACO 5.0 - Coding Altino Cars

Coding is an important skill to know because the future is moving to more technology based jobs.
Even if you don't become a programer the skills are still good to know because it makes you a better problem solver. In challenge one we have to work with a partner to program our car to move in a figure 8 shape. The goal was to do so without running into anything -  and in the most minimal amount of time as possible. The logic statement we used was: go straight, then shift right, straighten out then go right again. The go code was what we first embedded in our code to get the car to go forward. The steering command was used to shift the direction of our car, and delay was used as a time factor for how long the car went in a certain direction. This assignment was fairly difficult and extremely frustrating but it felt good to complete the assignment in the end.

The commands that were required to successfully complete Challenge #2 were: go straight then we turned the car right. After the car turned around we programed it to turn back around. I feel that in time with the right technology autonomous driving will be very safe. Although I think that part of me would always be worried that something would go wrong. I think that autonomous vehicles will be used for things such as ambulance accidents in the future. But but I don't think that will be until the technology is more complex.

ACO 3.0 - Art and Design

The elements of art used in my digital still life painting are line, texture and value. I used each element in different ways - all playing a role in contributing to the image. First off, I used line to outline and contour the subject. Value was used with texture to create the shadows in my image. My texture brush was smaller than the line brush that I used - It gave me more control in creating the shadows. The part I find the most enjoyable in the digital painting process is outlining the image mainly because I was able to add my own details into the image (like my name and different designs on the bottle). The most challenging part of the digital painting process for me would be adding the shadows - no matter how many times I tried they just didn't seem to look good.

My landscape was taken on Oahu at the beach. The similarities and differences between my finished landscape image and my finished still image are that in my finished landscape its more detailed than my still image (more texture value was included in my landscape). The reason for this was mainly because my still image was an outline - while my landscape had more of a filter over it. Reflecting on my process I stayed more on the basic side of things through the tutorial because I had to complete the landscape on my own time and wasn't too sure what I was doing at first. Using the more basic technique affected the outcome by resulting in an image that I was happy with but I also felt that I could've improved. All in all I feel that for my first time on my still image I think it turned out ok.

The portrait photo I used was taken in Los Angeles last summer. The portrait is of my Dad. To me it reminds me of the first time I went on a trip with just my dad, it brings back good memories. This image uses all the elements of art (line, value, texture, form, shape, color and space). It uses line to outline the subject and back round. Value to create texture and add shadows. Texture was implemented by creating the shadows. Form was added in to make the objects look three demential. Shape - to make organic and geometric shapes. Color was slightly incorporated but the image but the photo was mostly black and white, and finally space was the area around the subject and other objects in the image.

Looking back on my results my still life scored the highest. Almost everyone gave me a three and one person gave me a four. I feel that I got the results I did because I spent the most time on my still life and you can tell by the detail. It could improve on texture in the back round - but I did include details in the bottle. I feel goo about the results that I got but I feel that I could still improve my work.

ACO 5.0 Audio Production

Intonation and inflection can be used to maintain the interest of the audience by adding character to your story. If you only talk in a monotone voice - over time your audience begins to lose interest. My role in this assignment was being the group leader - this job required me to work on a little bit of everything. I helped give my input on the script, and I also did the voice overs. In my opinion the rehearsal process is really important because how you bring the script to life will determine if your project turns out good or not. Before you can record the final product its very important to go over your script - especially if you're reading it with multiple people its good to all be on the same page.

Reflecting back on our final product I would say that my group members and I did the best we could to keep our audience interested in our audio book. We also made sure to mention all the key components (all the 7 principles of design) and what they do. An obstacle we faced along the way was that our main vocal talent was sick so we had to improvise when it came to recording. If I had to do this same project again, with the same group of people I would probably want to record a little better. I feel that theres some parts that we could improve on when it comes to the quality of the sound. But all in all, I would say that for one take our recording was done to the best of our abilities. Looking back at the critique results I would say that I agree with the results, our highest being level of completion deserves a 3 because we worked very hard to answer all the questions fully and as descriptive as we could. When it comes to the scores we received for clarity of our voices I would disagree with the critique - honestly I thought that would be one of the higher scores.

ACO 6.0 - Proprietary Information

The FCC is an independent government agency that is responsible for regulating things such as the radio, television and all interstate communications. Copyright infringement is the "use of works protected by copyright law without permission". The legal consequences of using someone else's material without permission is different for every state, but some of these consequences include: paying the damages, prison time etc. To avoid things such as fines - you can use copyrighted materials if you go through the right steps. The first step is finding out if you even need permission to use the material,  if so you need to contact the owner, then identify the rights that are needed, lastly if you get permission make sure it's written up in an agreement. Fair use is the law in the US that allows limited use of copyrighted material without getting permission from the owner. An example of this is if you were to write a book review you could use a paragraph to get your point across. Another example is quoting lines from a song for a music review.

Confidentiality is the protection of personal information. Some information considered "confidential" includes: social security, medical history / records and bank details. Social Media has an impact on confidential information from the moment you sign up you're giving your location, date of birth, full name etc. All of these things build up to an increased rate to things like identity theft. My opinion on censorship is that it is good for things such as music, I think that its good when it comes to being around children, they don't need to be hearing cuss words on the radio. Freedom of speech is important and I feel that we should all be able to voice our opinion, but again when it comes to music on the radio when artist cuss frequently as they do and children listen to this music - it may have a negative affect. As for the 5th amendment in simple words what you do in your home is your right to privacy - but when it comes to the internet thats a public environment and there for it doesn't technically apply.

ACO 6.2: Examine ethical and communications to make appropriate decisions related to clients, co worker and society.

ACO 2.0 - Market Shifts

A market is an area that specific jobs fall under. Markets shift over time as technology develops. The development of technology is shaping the world around us in many ways. An example of this (on a small scale) is airdrop - previously we would have to transfer files through USB cords / hard drives, but now its all wireless. The technology industry has moved away from cords, and moved on to transferring files through a simple touch of a button. Another example of technology shifting is companies moving towards promoting their business on social media. Applications such as snapchat and instagram are getting well known for promoting companies in short 5/10 second videos.

I hope to move into / improve in the filmmaking and marketing industry. I want to improve in these areas because of the ways they can benefit me. I believe that the marketing skills will definitely help me become more successful, not only now but in the future as well. I think that as more and more people branch off into creating their own small businesses they don't know how to market their products. Having marketing skills you are more likely to know how to get your products well known and be more successful. In the future if I wish to start my own business (or get a job promoting someone else's) I will know how to reach a specific audience.

ACO 2.1 Analyze how shifts in market affect changes to media and design.
ACO 2.2 Evaluate how changing communication needs of a market are addressed by media and design.
ACO 2.3 Propose media and design solutions that address the changing needs in global markets.

ACO 4.0 - Communication Strategies

My communication changes depending on the people I talk to throughout the day. The way that I talk to my teachers isn't the same way I communicate with my "little sister" that I work with at the elementary school. I communicate with a variety of people such as, my parents, my friends, kids, teachers etc. I would say that I feel the most comfortable and understood with my mom and my friends. I feel this way because I can truly be myself around them. I would have to say that I feel the least comfortable communicating in front of big groups of people - Ive never been the most comfortable when it comes to public speaking but I feel that with more practice and time I will feel better about speaking in front of others.

When I graduate from high school I hope to go into the film/business industry, specifically a marketing management position. I have a passion for videography but I an also interested the business aspect of things. I enjoy being able to express myself without using words and videography is a great way of doing that. On the other hand I love dealing with numbers and logistics thats why I can see myself being a marketing manager. The communication skills required for these industries / jobs include; confidence, open mindedness, respect, feedback, and verbal communication.
